Sometimes it’s a natural disaster. Sometimes it’s as simple as catching the common cold. Today’s cell and gene therapies are delivered using a supply chain that is nearly identical to that of the first cellular therapy, stem cell transplant. And just like with transplant, managing that process can sometimes get…well, complicated.
“The challenge with any human-involved therapy is that things are constantly changing,” says Jamie Margolis, Ph.D., senior manager, Product Development Operations at Be The Match BioTherapies®. “Whether we are supplying cells to a hospital for infusion, or to a manufacturing site for use in a cellular therapy development, it is critical to protect the time-sensitive supply chain when dealing with fragile human-derived products.”
To reduce the risk for patients, communication is paramount.
“When you’re dealing with a supply chain that includes apheresis centers, manufacturers, logistics, health care providers, patients—all of the roles have different needs,” says Margolis. “You need to communicate quickly and effectively to make sure everybody is on the same page, but only for information that’s pertinent to them.”
MatchSourceSM—Be The Match BioTherapies’ supply-chain technology platform—was designed to provide critical end-to-end visibility for all stakeholders, and enable patient case management models to support highly personalized cell supply chains. To develop the platform, the Be The Match BioTherapies team drew on more than 30 years of experience managing life-saving stem cell transplants.
“Each role type—from manufacturer to health care providers—will have access to the information that’s pertinent to them,” says Margolis.
But good software can’t do it all—and that’s where patient case managers step in. Be The Match BioTherapies patient case managers are on call to regularly perform contingency plans and preparations for the likely scenarios that may occur throughout the supply chain. “When something happens, we have trained patient case managers that know when to pick up the phone,” says Margolis. “MatchSource isn’t a technology-only solution. This is about building a system backed by a supportive staff model. We’re hard-wired to help.”
